The rough, as the name suggests, is the unmown part of the golf course. In some cases, there is a strip of grass between the fairway and the rough, called the semi-rough, where the grass is mown, but not as short as on the fairway. This prevents the ball from rolling too far and ending up in the rough. Once in the rough, it is very difficult to find the ball amongst the long grass or other vegetation. There are no regulations for the grass height on a rough, so the course keeper decides this themselves. This also means that the mowing frequency varies per rough.
